Natives of Cataggaman, Tuguegarao City belong to the Itawit ethnic group (southern Cagayan, northern Philippines), who speak the Itawit language. Itawit which linguistically, belongs to Austronesian Malayo-polynesian lineage, has its peculiarities. Repetition of syllables, for instance is one of its characteristics. Where in the world would you have a sentence of just 1 syllable repeated 7 times? "Kaka, kakakaka ka?" which means, "Elder, (as in manong of the Ilocanos or kuya of the Tagalogs) are you the eldest?" Also, it is the only Philippine language that has F,J, V, and Z in its alphabet. Examples: F - uffun (help), afungat (mite), fulliag (a fresh water fish); J - nabajaw (yo inafi) (the rice got) spoiled, jebit (specially), Afujot (Lord God); V - vukat(open, month), vulawan (gold), avvut (hole); Z - ziraya (south), gazzit (anger), zizig (precipice). There are times Itawit is called Itawes. Linguisticaly, this is unaccepatle given one fact about Itawit relative to Ibanag, a kin austro-maloyo-polynesian language in southern Cagayan. Itawit equivalents of Ibanag words invariably end in "t". Examples: dupo (banana) - bahat, fulo (struggle) - fulat, kallo (vein) - kallat, allo (pity, creek) - allat. Also, rarely, if not, never, does an itawit word end in "s". Fact is, foreign words ending in "s" get integrated into Itawit by ending it with "t". Examples, (days of the week in Spanish): Lunes - Lunit, Martes - Martit, Miercoles - Miyerkulit, Viernes - Biyernit; (Spanish names): Nicolas - Kulat, Marcos - Markut, Luis - Luwit, Tomas - Tumat. The Itawit account for 171, 693 or 0.21% of the total Philippine popultaion in the 2000 census. Most of them live in the southern municiplaities of Cagayan - Piat, Tuao, Enrile, Solana, Tuguegarao, Iguig, Penablanca and Amulung. As in the case of the Itawit barangay of Cataggaman, in-migration, inter-marriages with other etnic groups - Ilocanos, Ibanags, Tagalogs,etc. and the influence of media, depending on one's perspective, have either diluted or enhanced the vocabulary and nuances of the language. vocabulary
