Cataggaman( meaning where the ants dwell),was the biggest barrio in Tuguegarao(now Tuguegarao City). Now, it is subdivided into three(3) barangays namely,Cataggaman Pardo,(where my mother Juning was born),Cataggaman Nuevo,(where I and papang Titong was born) and lots of my ancestors came from Cataggaman Viejo.
Looking back some fifty years, the scars of the just concluded world war II was still apparent and most of the time old folks begin telling their tale with words "kattu tiempo yo hapon" ( meaning, during the Japanese era). You notice people of all walks of life go places barefooted.
The will to survive and to improve their lives made the natives struggle and sent their kids to school and finished their studies. The local public schools were then at par with private/exclusive schools.Kids in school uniform walk some kilometers to the town.School-kids eating their baon/packed lunch during noon breaks were common sights.
Those who made it to college and finished their post graduate studies occupy high position in government. Some joined the private sectors and few indulged in private entrepenuer.
The once sleepy barrio is fast becoming a progressive and a highly urbanized place. The young generation do not have to go to distant place to fetch water-the water is now freely flowing right in their houses. Thanks to the initiative of the local officials. The rural electrification initiated by the late President Ferdinand E. Marcos lighted even the remotest house of the barrio. The well-paved streets are beautiful sights at night time as they are well-lighted.You could mistake it to some plushy places in MAKATI.The natives can call their relatives here and abroad directly as most of the houses are connected with landline telephone plus of course the availability in most household of mobile phones. The TV cable provides round the clock entertainment, connecting them to local as well as foreign TV shows.
In order to guarantee the steady delivery of the basic services , the people should join hand in hand with the local officials to improve the tax collection efficiency as this is the lifeblood of the government. As the great U.S.A. president said, "Ask not what your country can do for you, but ask what you can do for your country"
