Cataggaman (Nuevo,Viejo and Pardo) could very well be a typical poblacion of centuries-old itawit towns of Iguig, Amulung, Enrile, Piat, Penablanca, Solana and Tuao (Cagayan). It is even more urbanized than the poblacion of most municipalities in the Philippines. It has a private pre-school just across the Cagayan Nathional High School Annex (CNHS-Ann.) which is Methodist church-administered, 2 public elementary schools (located in Viejo and Pardo), a public secondary school (CNHS,Pardo) and a vocational-automotive school(Nuevo). If not for the easy access to government and private universities and colleges in Tuguegarao City, high school graduates from Nuevo, Viejo and Pardo could very well ensure the feasibility of a community college.
Urban amenities include piped water system, 2 available telephone lines (PLDT and Digitel), within coverage area of SMART & GLOBE, cement-paved roads, available lines for cable and satelite TV, restaurants (mostly panciteria) wet markets and "to-go meals" (talipapa establishments), internet cafes and of, course the accessible basic education institutions.
While predominantly Catholic, some Cataggaman residents have started embracing other Christian denominations like Church of the Later Saints (Mormon), Iglesia ni Cristo, and born-again Christian groups. In the early 1900s, the break-away group of Aglipay persuaded about 30% of erstwhile Roman Catholics to their fold. The number of "Aglipayanos" however, started waning in the 1960s which was occasioned by the infamous "Moncado" movement which promised largesse to fund contributing Aglipayanos that never came.
The three barangays (Nuevo, Viejo and Pardo) are predominantly Itawit. Marriages with Ilocanos, Tagalogs and Ibanags as well as in-migration is slowly bringing about a cosmopolitan community. This is evidenced by day-to-day transactions as with tricycle drivers or store attendants, in Tagalog. Contributory to this development of course is the easy access of most househols to the TV programs of Manila-based channels.
Social mobility as in any Philippine community is through education. Rarely would a household be without a college graduate. Unfortunately, however, a good number of them find financial returns from investment in higher education only from overseas employment as domestic helps, and care givers. Other professionals are in local employment as teachers, employees of government agencies, banks and other private firms or, in overses jobs mostly as nurses in the US, Canada, UK, Middle East and lately, a few as teachers in USA. Of note are successful professionals as businessmen, career executive officers of various governemnt agencies, senior offciers in the AFP and PNP, and political leaders at the city and provincial levels.
Cataggaman used to be too dependent on agriculture for their household income mainly in farming the fertile flood plains of Labbang for tobacco and corn, and Larak for peanuts. Uwwag, a lowlying part of the 3 Cataggaman used to produce rain-fed rice during rainy season and corn toward summer. Now, because of erosion, about 70% of Labbang is either a river bed of Cagayan river or has become part of Rendadu, the flood plains of Enrile, a municipality south of Tuguegarao, just across Cataggaman.
More on Cataggaman and its Itawit folk in my next notes.
